Bono Shares Gratitude After Receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom

U2’s Bono expressed heartfelt thanks after being honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Bono’s Humble Acknowledgment

The iconic U2 frontman joined 18 others in receiving the prestigious award from President Joe Biden on January 4.

“Frontmen don’t do humble, but today I was,” Bono shared on U2’s Instagram. He reflected on how rock ‘n’ roll granted him personal freedom.

Bono credited his bandmates Edge, Adam, and Larry for helping him find his voice. He also acknowledged those who fought harder for their freedoms.

Rock and Freedom: A Deep Connection

In an essay for The Atlantic, Bono explored the relationship between music and freedom. He cited Bob Dylan’s Chimes of Freedom as inspiration.

“Freedom shows up a lot in rock songs,” Bono noted. He emphasized its significance, growing up in 1960s Ireland, where political and personal freedoms were scarce.

Bono said that receiving the medal was not just for him, but for his bandmates and fellow activists.

Recognizing Bono’s Activism

The White House highlighted Bono’s activism against AIDS and poverty. His efforts brought together politicians to create the PEPFAR AIDS program.

Bono co-founded the advocacy groups ONE and (RED), both dedicated to fighting global health crises.
